Talldungen Gårdshotell Homely Swedish Getaway in Idyllic Österlen

Last summer, I had the pleasure of spending one night at Talldungen Gårdshotell in the beautiful south-eastern part of Scania (Skåne) – Österlen. The area is sometimes referred to as the Provence of Sweden. Personally, it brought my memories back to Piedmont in Italy, where we also spent a few nights at a so-called agriturismo – a bed & breakfast at a farm. At Talldungen, we were welcomed in the courtyard by hotel owners David and Emma Höök, and their two dogs Majo and Doris. I thought the dogs were named incorrectly since Doris was the mayonnaise-colored one!

After a stroll through the gardens, which looked like straight out of a midsummer celebration complete with poles and string lights, we went inside for a glass of wine. Natural wine, I should point out, because the philosophy at Talldungen is very much in line with the New Nordic ideas of organic produce and artisan products. That means wild yeast in the wine as well as the baked goods. In fact, Talldungen operates their own micro sourdough bakery. A bright yellow-colored Rietsch Sylvaner was so juicy and refreshing (as a matter of fact it was one of the best wines I had in 2016) and the perfect thirst quencher after a long car ride.

Talldungen Gårdshotell is the most homely, cozy, and relaxing place you can imagine. Far from all the dangers of the world and your stressful weekdays. You wake up to the sounds of buzzing insects and bird’s song, just like I remember from my great grandmother’s farm when I was a kid. The smell of homemade breakfast eventually dragged me out of bed. In the common room was a table filled with delicious and fresh local ingredients from the nearby farms. Salads made with love and bread baked with passion. Alas, we didn’t have dinner at Talldungen Gårdshotell this time, because Daniel Berlin was our primary dining goal (and my most anticipated dinner of 2016, stay tuned for the next update). However, next time I visit Talldungen I want to experience their evening menu as well. It looks delightful.

  • Stayed in the area(Södra Mellby) last summer and had lunch at Daniel Berlin. We will stay a week this summer also and I have allready booked a dinner at Talldungen. Can also recomend Hörte Brygga further down the coast. Agree that som of the area look a bit like Piedmonte where we will go first weekend in October this fall.
