Inspired by the Australian and Scandinavian coffee culture, the passionate barista and major coffee geek Linus Köster decided to open his own place. Today, Törnqvist is the best coffee shop in Hamburg. Rarely have I seen a store with a cleaner design than this. It’s minimalism taken to the extreme, both in terms of the menu and the interior design. The line-up of pitch-black coffee machines is impressive, especially against the bright white wall that just reads: “Flat White. Handbrew. Shot.” This is the only menu available at Törnqvist. One grinder is set to espresso-fine, the other tuned for a Kalita brew. I ordered the latter (not the latte). Linus asked me how I liked my coffee. When I said: “Fruity,” he reminded me that coffee is a fruit. Later, I asked for the Wi-Fi-password and learned that it was “itsafruit“. I notice a trend here …
Coffee doesn’t get much better than at Törnqvist. He filters his water and selects only the best roasteries in the Nordics, like La Cabra in Aarhus, The Coffee Collective in Copenhagen, Drop Coffee in Stockholm, da Matteo in Gothenburg, and Tim Wendelboe in Oslo. In fact, his dedication reminded and preference for simplicity reminded me of our very own Tim Wendelboe more than anyone. The only difference is that Törnqvist actually serves food, albeit limited to Scandinavian pastries and sourdough bread with cheese and butter.
