Review: Java’s Weekend Brunch (2017) Finally, a Good Breakfast Spot in Oslo!

This weekend, we walked to one of the most beautiful areas of town to enjoy a weekend brunch at Java Oslo – one of the best coffee shops in the city. This combined café and wine bar is situated along a small strip of restaurants, deli stores, and bakeries in Ullevålsveien at St. Hanshaugen. Java is in good company with one of my favorite eateries, Smalhans, as well as the specialty store Gutta på Haugen, which also sells one of the best ice creams in Oslo. I love sitting by the window at Java, people watching, and sipping delicious hand-brewed coffee. The baristas are always in a good mood and the quality of the brew is consistent regardless of who’s manning the bar.

Oslo doesn’t have that many decent breakfast or brunch places in my opinion. In London, I would typically head to Granger & Co. in Notting Hill, where the Australian egg master Bill Granger whips up a delicious brekky based mainly on eggs, bacon, and avocado. When I’m in Copenhagen, I could get my avocado on rye (or avokadomad as they call it) at Atelier September, or queue up at Møller Kaffe og Køkken for the full-on brunch menu. Thus, I was pleased to discover Java now offers avocado on rye, eggs Benedict, and stacks of American style pancakes with bacon and a sinful amount of maple syrup. Their Melbourne style weekend brunch is available every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

I ordered the Eggs Benedict (NOK 158) and Avocado on Rye (NOK 78) with an added poached egg (bumps the price to NOK 98). I could feel the crunch from the slightly toasted sourdough bread on every bite. Good quality ham, two perfectly poached eggs with a runny yolk, and a generous amount of Hollandaise sauce on top. Super tasty, but personally I could have done with half a slice, one egg, and less sauce at half the price. Maybe they have that option if you ask.

The avocado toast was an excellent slice of rye bread, gooey and warm with crispy edges. Not compact and chewy as you sometimes get them. Yet another perfectly poached egg with a runny yolk. Egg porn right there. Just a shame they had been a bit too eager with the sea salt because the avocado smash was otherwise really good. Drizzled with good olive oil and chili flakes for a slight sting. We’ll definitely keep coming back for this weekend treat. Next time, I’ll have the tower of pancakes.
