La Ragazza Experimental Tasting Menu in Gamla Stan

What started as an experimental test kitchen during the pandemic became a permanent restaurant in the heart of Gamla Stan. The lockdown success story of La Ragazza is a project from restaurateur Daniel Crespi and chef Patrik Castillo Grönlund. The restaurant is part of the “Kvarteret Leijontornet” (the Lion Tower Quarter), a block of restaurant and bar concepts owned by the same people. La Ragazza is part of the house, as is Flickan, they also have a bigger restaurant called Djuret, and a few bars.

The head chef, Patrik Castillo Grönlund, used to be the head chef at Flickan. During the pandemic, they made some changes to their restaurant concepts because of restaurant restrictions – Flickan was too small, so their kitchen team moved into La Ragazza. It became an experimental test kitchen of sorts during the pandemic, and was only open a few days a week. It was such a popular concept that they decided to lean all in. When Flickan could reopen, they kept Grönlund at La Ragazza, but made it half Italian and half Nordic (Flickan was Nordic in style). Now, Flickan is an aged sushi counter experience which is open only 3 days a week, and Grönlund is no longer involved in their kitchen.

The food at La Ragazza sometimes gives a nod to Italy and sometimes to the Nordics, but it’s always creative, delicious, and extravagant. During this meal we ate some of the best bites of the year – the signature “Hedonist Taco” made with A5 wagyu is worth a visit alone, and the brioche and foie gras sandwich is just as tasty as it sounds. It’s clear that Grönlund has real talent, we only wish that the portions were slightly bigger, or that there was a bread serving. But it’s definitely a restaurant worth visiting. La Ragazza is serving incredibly tasty food in a cozy, down-to-earth setting. The venue is more casual than some of the other tasting menu spots in town, with a charming and relaxed vibe. There’s also a small kitchen table if you want to watch the chefs at work. The wine list here is more classical than is our preference, but the extensive cellar has won many awards – if you’re into the more conventional wines, you’ll be quite happy.
