Holy Smoke BBQ

http://Holy%20Smoke%20BBQ
Krapperups kyrkoväg 116, Nyhamnsläge, Sweden

Open from Easter through summer, Holy Smoke BBQ is a piece of Texas in Sweden – in the most delicious way. This is authentic, American barbecue, and there’s nothing else like it in Europe. Owners Johan Fritzell and Johan Åkerberg visited over 100 spots in the U.S. to learn barbecue techniques before opening in 2014. Now, over a decade later, their “meatery” is a destination restaurant for carnivores, serving traditional American low-and-slow barbecue. On the menu you’ll find brisket, beef ribs, pulled pork, pork ribs, chicken, house-made sausages – and all the fixin’s! Pro tip: their annual summer party Heyday is our favorite food festival ever.

Köpmans Boutique Hotel

http://Köpmans%20Boutique%20Hotel
Köpmansgatan 7, Höganäs, Sweden

Köpmans is a charming boutique hotel with ten uniquely designed rooms, one painted pink with disco ball decor, and another with hot air balloon wallpaper. It’s quirky, whimsical, and absolutely one-of-a-kind – the kind of place where you feel like you never have to grow up. The ground floor is home to a deli shop and café with cardamom and cinnamon buns from a local bakery alongside specialty food ingredients. Breakfast is served down here – a scrumptious morning tray filled with scrambled eggs, ham, yogurt, chia pudding, seasonal veggies, and a sourdough bun with butter and cheese.

Bistro Saltarv

http://Bistro%20Saltarv
Pärlvägen 9, Beddingestrand, Sweden

Pärlvägen 9 is a deli and coffee shop open year-round, selling everything from fresh produce and baked goods to bathing suits and gardening gear. It’s a beachfront paradise in Beddingestrand, and hidden under the same roof is Saltarv, a bistro only open on Friday and Saturday evenings. Make a reservation for a three- or seven-course seasonal tasting menu, or walk in for snacks. We loved the sourdough bread with ramson butter and the smoky grilled carrots, but our favorite dish was a tender brisket served in a Sandefjord sauce.

Söderberg & Sara Stenugnsbageri

http://Söderberg%20&%20Sara%20Stenugnsbageri
Regementsgatan 2, Ystad, Sweden

Open since 2010 in Ystad, Söderberg & Sara is one of Skåne’s top bakeries, and one of the first movers in the Nordic artisan baking wave. With a focus on organic ingredients, locally sourced grains, natural fermentation, and baking in a stone oven, they’ve become renowned for their sourdough breads, buns, and pastries. On the shelves you’ll find classic Scandinavian treats like cardamom and cinnamon buns, French viennoiserie (the pain au chocolat was our favorite!), as well as other internationally inspired items, like the Portuguese pastel de nata. They also serve fantastic coffee made in collaboration with Solde Kafferosteri. The light-roasted natural Ethiopian tasted like peach nectar! Söderberg & Sara also has a location in Malmö.

Tumült

http://Tumült
Björnstjernegatan 5, Ystad, Sweden

Pink neon signs light the way as rap music blasts from an old military building in Ystad. Chef Daniel Müllern comes from a fine dining background, but now he’s opened a restaurant the exact opposite in style. The vibe at Tumült is loud, buzzy, and energetic. It’s intentionally chaotic, a bit tumultuous – and that’s half the fun. On the menu, you’ll find guilty pleasure food such as fried lobster tacos, decadent oxtail croquettes, lobster mac and cheese, and fluffy milk buns topped with caviar. Wash it all down with dangerously drinkable cocktails.

Ystad Saltsjöbad

http://Ystad%20Saltsjöbad
Saltsjöbadsvägen 15, Ystad, Sweden

Although this seaside bath hotel dates back to 1897, today it is the definition of a modern luxury spa destination. Ystad Saltsjöbad overlooks the Baltic Sea, but stepping inside this beachfront spa resort feels like being transported to the Italian Riviera. All rooms include a luxurious breakfast buffet, as well as access to the Lido Pool Club – a spacious spa area with beachside sunbeds, saunas, ice baths, and heated pools.

Villa Strandvägen

http://Villa%20Strandvägen
Strandvägen 1, Ystad, Sweden

The historic Villa Strandvägen opened in 1899, but was taken over by the ESS Group in 2016 and transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with only seven rooms. Even if you’re not a hotel guest, you’re invited to dine in the restaurant. The space features a beautiful, farmhouse-style open kitchen that makes the place feel relaxed and informal, like you’re dining in a friend’s fancy Hamptons home. The vibe is upscale and beachy chic with a fun playlist and friendly service that instantly makes you feel welcome. This dinner party comes with three courses from the relaxed, French bistro-inspired menu. Think dishes like caviar with a cheese custard and crispy potatoes, buttered gnocchi, and steak au poivre. Save room for dessert – the financier with whipped cream was our favorite!

Olof Viktors Café

http://Olof%20Viktors%20Café
Österlenvägen 86, Glemmingebro, Sweden

Olof Viktors is an institution in Skåne, open for over two decades in the Swedish countryside, supplying the region with bread, buns, and cakes. For many, this café is a destination spot for a fika – enjoy a coffee and a sweet treat in the beautiful open-air courtyard of this renovated farm. The classic princess cake is our favorite item here, with sponge cake, vanilla cream, raspberry jam, and a green marzipan blanket draped over the top with a pink marzipan rose.

Gamla Bageriet

http://Gamla%20Bageriet
Järnvägsgatan 3, Borrby, Sweden

Former photographer Jimmy Johansson started baking during the pandemic. Soon after, he took over the old general store in Borrby and turned it into the region’s best bakery. Now with two locations, this pandemic pop-up bakery has become a permanent fixture and meeting point for the local community, with sourdough breads, buns, and pastries, as well as sandwiches. Don’t miss the vanilla bun, with cardamom-studded dough dipped in sugar and filled with a rich vanilla custard.

Köpmangatan 6

http://Köpmangatan%206
Köpmangatan 6, Borrby, Sweden

Our favorite casual restaurant in Skåne is Köpmangatan 6, a cozy, homey restaurant in Borrby with friendly service and delicious food. At lunch you can choose a main course: fish, meat, or vegetarian. We enjoyed a classic plate of Swedish meatballs with potatoes and lingonberries, and cod in a white wine sauce. For dinner, the menu expands with snacks, starters, mains, and desserts. Don’t miss the grilled focaccia with chicken liver and rhubarb, or the heart-stoppingly delicious “Stenbeck” – a coupe filled with potato purée topped with crispy shallots, brown butter, and a healthy dollop of løyrom. On weekend evenings, the neighboring Picklebar opens, serving themed drinks and snacks like pickle margaritas and pickle pizzas alongside pub quizzes.

Vyn Restaurant

http://Vyn%20Restaurant
Höga vägen 72, Simrishamn, Sweden

One of the world’s best restaurants is hidden in the Swedish countryside. Vyn is the crown jewel of Skåne and the new chapter for one of Sweden’s most celebrated chefs, Daniel Berlin. A renovated farmhouse has been transformed into the height of Nordic luxury – and the food here matches the spectacular setting, with comforting flavors and top-quality ingredients. The word “vyn” means “the view” in Swedish, named for the panoramic sea views from the dining room. The menu features local Scandinavian seafood, paired with the best ingredients of the season. A dish that’s become a signature is the “hot and cold scallop” – a half raw, half cooked Norwegian scallop, served with a velvety sauce made from apple, dill, sugar kelp seaweed, and scallop roe. Vyn isn’t just a fine dining restaurant – it’s a destination. This is one of the very top food experiences in Scandinavia, and a place worth a special journey. Vyn is featured on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list and currently has two Michelin stars – and it won’t be long until they get the third.

Vyn Hotel

http://Vyn%20Hotel
Höga vägen 72, Simrishamn, Sweden

Vyn is more than a restaurant – it’s the ultimate culinary getaway. In the same building as the fine dining restaurant are fifteen beautifully designed hotel rooms where you can spend the night. A stay at this luxury boutique hotel includes a lovely farm-style breakfast served in the main dining room. The table fills with food: yogurt, granola, and seasonal fruit; cold cuts, cheese, and bread from the nearby bakery; eggs with lingonberries; and brown butter and earl grey madeleines. Vyn is beautiful to visit all year round – in spring when the rapeseed fields are in bloom and golden flowers stand in contrast to the blue sea, in summer when the days are long and sun streams in through the windows, and in autumn when the leaves change color and the cozy fireplace beckons you inside.

Vyn Food & Wine Bar

http://Vyn%20Food%20&%20Wine%20Bar
Höga vägen 72, Simrishamn, Sweden

Located on the same stunning property as the hotel and fine dining restaurant is the Vyn Food & Wine Bar. This casual restaurant has a Michelin Bib Gourmand and serves a seasonal four-course menu as well as à la carte dishes. It’s the perfect spot if you want a taste of Daniel Berlin’s kitchen without committing to the full tasting menu, or if you want to extend your stay at Vyn. Dishes highlight local farmers as well as ingredients from their vegetable garden. In the summer, enjoy drinks in the greenhouse.

Bobergs på Hamngården

http://Bobergs%20på%20Hamngården
Östersjögatan 94, Brantevik, Sweden

Bobergs på Hamngården is a Swedish fine dining restaurant that flies under the radar. We enjoyed a fantastic tasting menu here that highlighted local, seasonal ingredients in stunning presentations. One highlight dish featured a potato cake cooked in chicken fat, submerged in brown butter foam and topped with Swedish sustainable caviar. Another favorite combined scallop, yuzu, soy, and horseradish, topped with mesmerizing spheres of cucumber and tiny forget-me-not flowers. We enjoyed the meal in the dining room of the cozy bed and breakfast with a view of the Brantevik harbor. Could this be Skåne’s next Michelin star?

Gustafs på Österlen

http://Gustafs%20på%20Österlen
Gladsax Bygata 44, Simrishamn, Sweden

Gustaf Berggrensson set out to make authentic Neapolitan pizza in rural Sweden. After building his own pizza oven during the pandemic, he opened a hole-in-the-wall pizzeria in Kivik in 2021, and later moved to a larger space with a big backyard in Gladsax. There are some classics on the menu as well as some funky flavors that rotate – but the dough is the star of the show here. We tried the Tropic Thunder with mango salsa, barbecued pulled pork and jalapeños, the "Strong & Meaty" with tomato sauce, spicy salami, and 'nduja, and a mushroom pizza with garlic and crème fraîche. But our favorite pizza of all was a Midsummer special, featuring new potatoes, crème fraîche, dill, red onions, brown butter, and lemon zest. Gustafs also operates a frozen pizza factory, supplying their pies to grocery stores and event venues around Sweden.

Byvägen 35

http://Byvägen%2035
Byvägen 35, Sankt Olof, Sweden

Byvägen 35 is a not-so-hidden gem in Sankt Olof, a secret garden and pastry paradise – and the perfect place to stop for an afternoon fika. Grab a coffee and a cardamom bun, or indulge in our favorite item: the almond cake topped with vanilla cream. Drop by in the evenings for sourdough pizza.

Tryffelsvinet

http://Tryffelsvinet
Torget, Kivik, Sweden

Tryffelsvinet (The Truffle Pig) has a location in both Kivik and Ystad, so you’re never too far from good pasta when the Italian cravings hit in Skåne. At lunch, you can choose from a few different dishes, such as vitello tonnato, bolognese, and pasta “frutti di mare.” At dinner, the menu expands with even more pastas on offer as well as meat and fish dishes. Of course, there’s the option to top anything with fresh truffles!

Bykrogen i Österslöv

http://Bykrogen%20i%20Österslöv
Arkelstorpsvägen 79, Kristianstad, Sweden

A former potato starch factory was transformed into a restaurant and hotel, and has been operating in the countryside for over 25 years. The ten-course seasonal menu at Bykrogen i Österslöv is rustic in style with elevated flavors. A highlight dish featured bread-fried pike perch, with a potato sauce, spring onion oil, trout roe, and crispy leeks. We also enjoyed their play on fried calamari – onion-ring sized spheres served with a dill and Vesterbotten cheese dip. The service is incredibly friendly and the wine cellar is equally impressive.
