Tulum is a holiday paradise in the Quintana Roo region of Mexico, where a turquoise ocean and long, sandy beaches meet with palm trees and a jungle as far as the eye can see. As long as you are in the mood for tacos and don’t mind a casual setting, you can find quite a few decent restaurants both along the beach strip and in downtown Tulum. Use this foodie map to find the best eats while you’re on vacation. Directions in Tulum can be difficult as none of the places have a proper address, but our map has got you covered. Not in the mood to leave the beach during the day? No worries, do like Taquería La Eufemia suggest: "Relax and eat some f*cking tacos." Their beach bar allows you to remain on your towel all day, licking sun, sipping to a Tecate or Pacifico, and munching fish tacos. Remember to specify that you want them tempura-fried.

Don't believe the hype. Hartwood isn't as revolutionary as rumor has it – it's just a cozy, al fresco, jungle restaurant serving grilled food. A perfect place to enjoy a Tulum evening, if you can manage to get in. Located next to Mur Mur and opposite of the Parayso Hotel, the only way to get a seat is to show up when they open and book a table later in the week. Don't bother with the online reservations – they won't reply.

Mur Mur is an outdoor restaurant and part of a hippie shopping complex along the beach strip of Tulum. Famous chef and restaurateur Diego Hernández Baquedano, originally from Baja California, has designed a menu around local, seasonal produce, prepared according to traditions and served to please the modern foodie. Most of the cooking is done over an open fire.

Origami is the prettiest looking ice cream shop along the Tulum beach strip, and serves delicious artisanal Italian gelato! Don't miss Caribbean flavors like coconut, hibiscus, passion fruit, and cinnamon. Relax in their bean bag chairs while you cool down.

Safari is a simple outdoors restaurant for tacos. They specialize in fish tacos, and that is indeed what you should order. Safari is located 8 kilometers down the road called Tulum-Boca Paila, on the jungle side opposite of Hotel Cabaña Los Lirios Tulum. The place is easily recognizable by the vintage 1971 silver Airstream travel trailer parked in the yard, which functions as a kitchen.

Kitchen Table is a simple jungle kitchen, where the cooking is done in part over an open fire. Guests can watch the chefs work as they prepare the food. Most dishes are served on rustic wooden boards. Flavors are good, but not spectacular – and the same goes for the cocktails. However, the hospitality and service is great.

Taquería Honorio is a no-frills breakfast spot in downtown Tulum serving the best tacos in town. The specialty is cochinita pibil (pork seasoned with sour oranges and achiote) served with pickled red onions, and the restaurant is open until they sell out. This is a spot for locals, with plastic lawn furniture and even plates wrapped in plastic bags. Condiments are already on the table when you sit down.

El Capitán has a flagship restaurant along the main road Avenida Coba which leads to the beach strip. We visited the smaller bar and restaurant in the center of downtown Tulum. They specialize in shrimp tacos, but don't miss the ceviche! We ordered the ceviche "El Capitán" with caramelized onions and lots of habanero chili. Hot, hot, hot! Wash it down with local beers.

Antojitos La Chiapaneca is the place to go for tacos al pastor in downtown Tulum. This is where locals, and those in-the-know, gather for dinner to eat tacos or salbutes at 10 pesos a piece with spit-roasted pork and local cheese (always get "con queso"). Condiments are found in the middle of the restaurant, for everyone to help themselves. Don't miss the lovely aguas frescas!

Just across the road from Antojitos La Chiapaneca you find El Carboncito. Here, you can get tacos al pastor as well, but what you really want is the chorizo tacos. The meat is served with 5-6 tortillas. Condiments are on the table. You can skip the aguas frecas, they are not as chilled and tasty as on the other side of the street.
