Maaemo is One of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants! No. 35 in 2018

I had a really good feeling that Maaemo would enter the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list this year, and, luckily, I was right. Despite being no. 79 last year, Maaemo managed to climb a staggering 44 spots and entered the list at no. 35. Being Norway’s only three-Michelin-starred restaurant and one of my all-time favorite places to eat, that is so incredibly well deserved. To be recognized as one of the world’s 50 best restaurants is no small feat. Maaemo is up there with amazing places around the world, like Gaggan and Geranium.

Esben Holmboe Bang came to the award show in the food city of Bilbao, Spain with his lovely wife Kaja, and part of his team, including head chef Halaigh Whelan-McManus. In his typical style, Esben has been very secretive about the award. Since he does not have a personal Instagram account anymore, the only place to follow his whereabouts is on Maaemo’s official account which is not updated too often. I had almost lost hope, when, finally, he posted a photo of himself together with Alain Passard yesterday night. A good sign that he was town. Huge congratulations to Esben Holmboe Bang and his team!

The award show just ended, and Osteria Francescana once again climbed to the no. 1 position. Check the full list below.
