Spontan Vinbar 2.0 New Location of Our Favorite Trondheim Hangout

Our favorite hangout in Trondheim is Spontan Vinbar – and not only because they have the best natural wine list in town. Spontan moved locations in 2022 from its original premises at Dronningens gate 26 to a much larger restaurant space at Fjordgata 1. Now, the restaurant is divided into two distinct sections – a wine bar at the front, and the full restaurant at the back. Like before, you can drop by Spontan for a glass and some snacks in the wine bar (of course, the chicken liver mousse is still on the menu). If you want the full shebang, you can book a table in the back restaurant and enjoy a five- or ten-course seasonal tasting menu.

The food at Spontan is rooted in the New Nordic cuisine, using the best local ingredients which chef Fredrik Engen pairs with ridiculously tasty sauces. Some highlights from our meal were the Norwegian langoustine with fried yeast emulsion and pickled elderflower, and the hasselback potato with a sauce of sour cream, shallots, chives, and whitefish roe. In the spacious new kitchen, Engen has brought the level of the food up even one notch higher than before. Could Spontan be Trondheim’s next Michelin star?
