Christmas time is here! The streets of Copenhagen have been fully decked with string lights and Christmas trees, Santa’s sleigh is parked outside of Hotel D’Angleterre, and Christmas markets have opened on Kongens Nytorv and Højbro Plads serving gløgg (mulled wine), æbelskiver (Danish pancake balls), and other treats. Whether you’re ready or not, Santa is coming to town. But have no fear! We have a list of all the places where you can go for a traditional julefrokost (Christmas lunch) and all the best restaurants that will be open on New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen. And, as usual, all the exciting new openings, events, pop-ups, and collabs happening this December in Copenhagen.

Julefrokost – all of December!

Some of the more traditional spots in town (i.e. Schønnemann) have been booked for six months, but there are still lots of great restaurants where you can grab a seat at the Christmas table. Here are some of our favorite places to go for julefrokost:

  • Aamanns 1921 has already kicked off the holiday season with their famous Christmas lunch. The price is 525 DKK per person and includes eight different dishes served family-style. Click here to book a table.
  • The Big Barr Christmas Table is available from November 27th until December 20th, Friday to Sunday for lunch. The price is 595 DKK per person and includes all the Danish traditional dishes, like herring and duck with browned potatoes. Click here to book a table.
  • Christianshavns Færgecafé started serving their Christmas lunch on November 11th, it’s available from Thursday to Saturday for lunch. The price is 449 DKK per person and includes herring, fish, and meat dishes, and risalamande. Click here to book a table.
  • Møntergade is also open serving an epic Christmas feast! The price is 595 DKK per person and includes Christmas sausage, herring, salmon, pork, duck, and risalamande. Click here to book a table.
  • Øens Have on Refshaleøen is hosting Christmas parties in their yurt. For 1000 DKK per person, guests get a five-course organic Christmas menu with an open bar serving organic beers and natural wines, and the party lasts until midnight. Click here to book a table.

Torsten Vildgaard Vild Vinter Pop-Up – December 2nd

The Vipp Supper Club series continues with a one-night only residency with Torsten Vildgaard at the Pencil Factory in Islands Brygge. Chef Vildgaard worked at Noma for eleven years before opening Studio, where he earned a Michelin star in only four months. Now, he will craft a special menu honoring Denmark’s wild winter – only 20 seats available. Click here to book a seat.

Gasoline Grill Christmas Fair – December 5th

Gasoline Grill is throwing a Christmas party with their friends at their Carlsberg Byen location on December 5th. Jul til Døren will be selling Christmas trees, Hija de Sanchez will make tacos, BEC CPH will be slinging bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches, Strange Weather Brew will serve beer, The American Pie Company will have seasonal pies, and The Cookie Aisle will have chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies. Kristian Baumann Pasta Jam – December 5th

Chef Kristian Baumann of Koan (and formerly 108) is taking over the kitchen at Mirabelle for one night only. Tickets are 345 DKK per person and include a few starters, bread, pasta, and dessert. Lago – Opening December 7th

Located along Søerne (the lakes) in Copenhagen, Lago will be a Mediterranean restaurant and natural wine bar from James Barnard, Asger Hjort (Bar Poldo), and the guys behind Volatil, Uva Rosa, and Steffi Graf. The head chef previously worked at the likes of Blue Hill, Momofuku, and Geist, and the food will be vegetable-focused. Opening December 7th.

The Caribbean Housewife Roast – December 1st, 8th, and 15th

Back by popular demand, The Caribbean Housewife returns to Sønder Boulevard with her signature soups, every Wednesday until December 15th. The four-course menu is 350dkk and includes mango ceviche, sweet potato noodles, and ube ice cream. A wine pairing is available, featuring female natural winemakers like Alanna Lagamba. Grønt Marked Christmas Edition – December 12th and 19th

The city’s biggest farmer’s market, Grønt Marked is turning into a Christmas market this December! In addition to all the usual market offerings, shop organic ingredients for making your holiday feasts at home, special Christmas treats, and bring your kids for fun holiday workshops like cookie decorating and flower arranging. Find the Christmas markets at Øens Have on December 12th, and in Nørrebro at Guldberg Byplads on December 19th.

St. Lucia Day – December 13th

Christmas came early – Juno the Bakery will be extraordinarily open on a Monday to honor St. Lucia Day. Scandinavians celebrate typically this holiday with saffron buns, a bright yellow pastry that shines light into the dark winter months. Other seasonal offerings will also be available, including French nougats, caramels, and confit oranges dipped in chocolate. (Hint hint: perfect stocking stuffers!)

American Natural Wine Tasting at Pulp Wine – December 4th

Calling all Thirsties! Our next wine tasting will take place at Pulp Wine in Valby. The focus will be American natural winemakers from California and Oregon, like Martha Stoumen, Maloof Wines, and Subject to Change Winery. Snaps School + Smørrebrød Feast – December 5th

VIP members of The Hungries have been invited to go back to school – to SNAPS school! You will have the chance to learn all about how to make snaps, and will get to mix and blend some homemade snaps at Christianshavns Færgecafé. Then, you’ll get to sit down for dinner and enjoy the Sailor’s Christmas platter of 4 different dishes, as well as a battery of 5 different types of snaps. There will be snaps singing and plenty of snaps drinking – and you’ll get to take home a bottle of Skippersnaps, Captain Erik’s line of homemade snaps. Limited spots left – join the club today!
