Christmas time is here! The streets of Copenhagen have been fully decked with string lights and Christmas trees, the Nutcrackers are standing outside of Hotel D’Angleterre, and Christmas markets have opened on Kongens Nytorv and Højbro Plads serving gløgg (mulled wine), æbelskiver (Danish pancake balls), and other treats. Whether you’re ready or not, Santa is coming to town. But have no fear! We have a list of all the places where you can go for a traditional julefrokost (Christmas lunch) with all the snaps you can dream of, and a list of the best restaurants that will be open on New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen. And, as usual, all the exciting new openings, events, pop-ups, and collabs happening this December in Copenhagen.

Julefrokost – all of December!

Some of the more traditional spots in town (i.e. Schønnemann) have been booked for six months, but there are still lots of great restaurants where you can grab a seat at the Christmas table. Here are some of our favorite places to go for julefrokost:

    • Aamanns 1921 has already kicked off the holiday season with their famous Christmas lunch. The price is 530 DKK per person and includes seven different dishes served family-style. (Dinner is also available, with a ten-course menu for 675 DKK per person.) Aamanns Deli also offers a take-away option, and there are also Christmas menus available at Aamanns Replik in Skuespilhuset (The Playhouse) and Aamanns Genbo in Carlsberg Byen.     • The Big Barr Christmas Table is available from November 25th until December 18th, Friday to Sunday for lunch. The price is 675 DKK per person and includes all the Danish traditional dishes, like herring and duck with browned potatoes. Click here to book a table.
    • Christianshavns Færgecafé started serving their Christmas lunch on November 17th, it’s available from Thursday to Saturday for lunch. The price is 549 DKK per person and includes herring, fish, and meat dishes, and risalamande. Click here to book a table.
    • Møntergade is also open serving an epic Christmas feast from November 14th! The price is 650 DKK per person and includes Christmas sausage, herring, salmon, pork, duck, and risalamande. Click here to book a table.
    • Øens Have on Refshaleøen is hosting Christmas parties in their yurt. For 1200 DKK per person, guests get a five-course organic Christmas menu with an open bar serving organic beers and natural wines, and the party lasts until midnight. Click here to book a table.
    • Christmas at Palægade kicks off on Friday, November 18th. Both a lunch and dinner menu are available, for 645 DKK and 845 DKK, respectively, including all of the classics from herring to roast pork. Click here to book a table.

Simply Grapes Wine Fair – December 1st

Low-intervention wine importer Simply Grapes is hosting their first wine fair on Thursday, December 1st at H15 in Kødbyen. Natural winemakers from Austria, Germany, Croatia, and Italy will be present. See below for a list of winemakers attending and booking information.

Studio 2.0 – December 1st

Restaurant Studio, which previously was located inside The Standard building on Havnegade, has moved premises to the historic neighborhood of Carlsberg Byen. The new space of Studio 2.0 is located on Ottilia Jacobsens Plads on the old brewery grounds and will open on December 1st. The ambitions are high: chef Christoffer Sørensen and his team hope to reclaim the Michelin star that Studio received back in 2014 when Torsten Vildgaard was head chef. Saji – December 1st

Located on Studiestræde (just a few meters from their old workplace) is Saji, an Indonesian restaurant from Samuel Tobing and Jimmy Orlando. The duo has been friends since culinary school over a decade ago, and previously worked together at the Vietnamese restaurant La Tre Street Kitchen. Now, they will cook straightforward food inspired by their home country of Indonesia. Saji is set to open on December 1st.

Balthazar Chef’s Social Hours – December 1st

Jakob Mielcke (Mielcke & Hurtigkarl) and Jakob De Neergaard (Marchal) are teaming up to host a social hour party at Balthazar. Drop by between 18:00 and 20:00 for some pre-dinner snacks and Champagne. The food is free, the drinks are not. Click the post below for reservation information.

Mooncakes at Depanneur – December 4th

On Sunday, December 4th baker Baijie Curdt-Christiansen is having a one-day only pop-up selling mooncakes at Depanneur. Available from 13:00 until sold out.

Connection x Fredrikshøj – December 4th

Chef Wassim Hallal of two-Michelin-starred restaurant Fredrikshøj in Aarhus will join chef Alan Bates at Connection for a special four-hands lunch. There will be a tasting menu including luxury ingredients, and a wine pairing of the best bottles in the house. See below for booking information.

Kadeau Chefs Pop-Up at Ancestrale – December 5th

Feeling shellfish? On Monday, December 5th, chefs John Sutherland and Josh Greene of restaurant Kadeau will host a crustacean-focused pop-up at Ancestrale. Together, they will prepare a seven-course menu of fresh, local produce for 650 DKK. Of course, there will be plenty of wine available.

Climate Café – December 5th

Four industry friends have come together to create Copenhagen’s Climate Café, an opportunity for the community to gather and hold conversations discussing ways to combat climate change. The climate café meets regularly around Copenhagen – the next event will be on December 5th at Il Buco. More information below.

Hiša Franko x Terra – December 11th

Slovenian chef Ana Roš of Hiša Franko (no. 34 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022) joins chef Valerio Serino of Terra for a one-night dinner. Together, they will prepare a ten-course dinner showcasing local ingredients from small producers. The menu is 3000 DKK per person including a drink pairing. Click here to book a table.

Kappo Andō – December 14th

Kappo Andō is an Osaka-inspired Japanese eatery from Henrik Ando Levinsen (the sake minister) and Mads Battefeld (Sushi Anaba). The style is between a casual izakaya and a more formal kaiseki, with two set menus offered at the counter and an à la carte menu on Sundays. Fish, vegetables, and meat will be prepared on a yakitori grill, and there will also be wine, sake, beer, tea, coffee, and cocktails. Kihoskh Christmas Market – December 3rd, 10th, and 17th

On three Saturdays in December, the popular Vesterbro bodega Kihoskh will be hosting Christmas markets from 14:00 until 16:00. There will be lots of fun drinks to buy, as well as jewelry, books, and handmade gifts. Get ready to stock those stuffings!

Grønt Marked – December 4th, 11th, and 18th

The city’s biggest farmer’s market, Grønt Marked is turning into a Christmas market this December! In addition to all the usual market offerings, shop organic ingredients for making your holiday feasts at home, special Christmas treats, and bring your kids for fun holiday workshops like cookie decorating and flower arranging. Find the Christmas markets on Refshaleøen by Lille Bakery on December 4th, in Vesterbro at Litauens Plads on December 11th, and in Nørrebro at Guldberg Byplads on December 18th.

    Hungries Julefrokost at Møntergade – December 10th

    On Saturday, December 10th, we’re hosting our second annual Hungries julefrokost (Christmas dinner) – this time at Møntergade, one of our favorite traditional Danish restaurants. There will be all the classic holiday dishes on the table, including herring, Christmas sausage, salmon, pork, duck, and risalamande (rice pudding with almonds). Of course, there will be lots of snaps (haps! haps! haps!), so practice your snaps singing now before the big party! Note: this event is wait list only.

    Indonesian Feast at Saji – January 5th

    The Hungries are headed to Saji, the brand new restaurant from Sam Tobing and Jimmy Orlando, for an Indonesian feast. Join us on Thursday, January 5th for this one-of-a-kind dinner including a welcome drink, starter, main course, dessert, and coffee or tea. We will be seated in the “lesehan” – a traditional Balinese-style dining experience, with floor seating on pillows.
