Welcome back! As residents slowly trickle back into town after their vacations, the city wakes up from its holiday siesta and jumps into motion. Restaurants are reopening, and food festivals are kicking off. August is arguably Denmark’s finest time of year, the month with the best chance for good weather. So get ready to eat and drink in the sun, and soak up those last longs days of the glorious Scandinavian summer. Keep reading to see a list of the exciting new openings, events, pop-ups, and collabs happening this month in Copenhagen.

Dill Pop-Up at Tivoli – August 2nd-September 10th

Chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason and his team from the Michelin-starred restaurant Dill in Iceland are moving their restaurant to Copenhagen for a two month pop-up at Tivoli. Come get a taste of Icelandic specialities for a limited time in Denmark. (Dung-smoked trout, anyone?) The tasting menu is 1200 DKK per person. Click here to book a table.

Kadeau Bornholm x KOL – August 8th

Chef Santiago Lastra from restaurant KOL in London is joining the team at Kadeau for a legendary, one-night-only pop-up on the beautiful Danish island of Bornholm. (Obviously, this event is outside of Copenhagen, but we thought it was worth traveling for, and therefore worth the inclusion!) Want to join for a night of food, wine, and mezcal? Aris’ Smash Burgers at Cadence – August 12th

On Friday, August 12th, head to Cadence in Carlsberg Byen for an evening of burgers, booze, and music. Aris Albinana will be making his signature smash burgers on milk buns starting at 18:00 CEST.

Donda Deli – August 18th

Opening on Thursday, August 18th in Vesterbro is Donda Deli, an eatery and deli shop from Donda. The restaurant is a slightly more casual little sister to their popular Christianshavn restaurant, open for lunch and dinner serving small plates and dishes from Donda’s take-away menu such as a filet o’fish sandwich and chicken wings. The deli shop will sell a variety of Mexican goods and ingredients to take home, including Donda’s signature flour tortillas, dried chiles, salsas, meat, cheese and fish – and, of course, lots of bottles of natural wine. Reservations will go live on Wednesday, August 10th.

Street Food Around The Lakes (Street Food om Søerne) – August 18th-21st

As part of the kickoff of the Madland Food Festival, food trucks and food stalls will be set up around the lakes in Copenhagen for three days, from August 18th until August 21st. There will be over 60 food concepts present at the festival, as well as beers from Mikkeller, ice cream, coffee, and music. See the full food list here.

Gourmetmarked Refshaleøen – August 20th

On Saturday, August 20th, from 10:00 until 14:30, a gourmet food market will take over the forested part of Refshaleøen. The event will be hosted by Søris (an organic farm shop) and Kalu (a specialty delicatessen), and together they will showcase some of the finest ingredients from Denmark and southern Europe. You’ll find seasonal fruit, Danish lamb, Italian truffles, kimchi, juice, natural wine, and more.

Madland Food Festival – August 18th-October 9th

The sustainability-focused food festival, Madland, kicks off on August 18th and lasts until October 9th. According to their website, their mission is to “connect and equip professional food people as well as food citizens to take an active position on our responsibility and influence in sustainable change.” Click here to see the full program of events, which include farm visits, coffee courses, sustainable dinners, and more.

Copenhagen Cooking – August 19th-28th

Copenhagen’s annual food festival, Copenhagen Cooking, returns on August 20-29. The 10-day festival includes cooking classes and exciting restaurant pop-ups. Click here to see the full program.

Neolokal x À Terre – August 24th

On Wednesday, August 24th, chef Maksut Aşkar from the modern Turkish fine dining restaurant Neolokal in Istanbul will be joining French chef Yves Le Lay of À Terre for a one-of-a-kind four hands dinner. Together, the chefs will prepare a six course menu, which will be served with a wine pairing. The price is 2,000 DKK per person. Click here to book a table.

Soyokaze x Kōnā Pop-Up – August 25th

On Thursday, August 25th, chef Batjargal Bagi Ochirbat will take over the counter at Kōnā for a one-night-only pop-up. Chef Ochirbat runs the restaurants Soyokaze and Soyokafe in Stockholm. The dinner is 1100 DKK per person and consists of a 14-course sushi menu. There is also a sake pairing available, curated by his daughter Jakuushka.⁠ ⁠Click here to book a table.

Autumn Dinner at The Norrmans – August 25th

On Thursday, August 25th, head to The Norrmans Farmhouse just south of Køge (an hour from Copenhagen) for a four-course dinner featuring produce from Klippingegård. The food costs 650 DKK and with a wine pairing everything costs 1250 DKK. Email [email protected] to book a seat at the table.

Gasoline Grill American State Fair – August 27th

‘MURICA, F*CK YEAH! Our favorite burger joint, Gasoline Grill, is hosting an American-style State Fair at their location in Carlsberg Byen on Saturday, August 27th. They’re gathering some of their favorite Americans for a big outdoor party, so you just might see the likes of Geoffrey Canilao from Balderdash, American Pie Company, BEC, and Holy Smoke BBQ throwing down some epic food and drinks. (Of course, this American food blogger will be there, too!) There will also be live jazz music. The festivities begin at 11:00 a.m.

Lazy Susan Launch Party – August 28th

The restaurant formerly known as Tigermom has closed and pivoted to a new concept: Lazy Susan, an à la carte, casual restaurant serving modern Asian-inspired dishes with organic, sustainable ingredients. There is also a chef’s menu available from head chef Maxine Bird. The restaurant will officially open on Wednesday, August 31st, but on Sunday, August 28th they will throw a pre-opening party from 16:00 until 19:00, and the first 100 guests will receive a drink and a signature bite for 10 DKK.

Sunday Roast at Brasserie Prins – August 28th

On the last Sunday of every month, Brasserie Prins will serve a classic Sunday roast. The festivities will kick off at noon and go until midnight, featuring different meats every month. August will feature whole cuts of organic lamb from Langebjerggård in Denmark alongside crispy roasted potatoes, cabbage, glazed carrots, and more. Click here to book a table.

Tomato Workshop at Lille Bakery – August 28th

Mads Battefeld x The Lab Kitchen – August 30th

Every month, a guest chef takes over at The Lab Kitchen, to host a one-night-only pop-up. On August 30th, the guest chef will be Mads Battefeld of Sushi Anaba and the soon-to-open Kappo Andō. Angelika Pop-Up at Mangholm – September 12th & 13th

The world’s best restaurant, Geranium, announced on their Instagram channel that their plant-based sister restaurant, Angelika, would return for a two-day pop-up this September at Mangholm, an organic farm outside of Copenhagen in Hillerød. The menu is 1800 DKK per person and includes a drink pairing with wine and juice. Proceeds will be donated to the Danish Nature Fund. Angelika served us the best vegan menu we’ve ever tried, so see the Instagram post below for details about booking.

Grønt Marked – August 7th, 14th, and 21st

The city’s biggest farmer’s market, Grønt Marked, first started on Refshaleøen, where it still serves organic vegetables, ciders, kombuchas, kimchi, and ferments on the first Sunday of every month. Now, the market has also expanded to Vesterbro and Nørrebro – find your favorite farmers at Litauens Plads on the second Sunday of every month and at Guldberg Byplads next to Rondo on the third Sunday of every month. No matter where you live, you’re never very far from a market!

Summer Restaurant in Kulturtårnet – June 1st-August 27th

The summer restaurant in Kulturtårnet (the Culture Tower) returns to Knippelsbro this June until August, serving natual wines from Rosforth & Rosforth and a four-course dinner highlighting local vegetables and fish. The Hungries x The Caribbean Housewife – August 10th

On Wednesday, August 10th, The Hungries will be taking over the chef’s table at The Caribbean Housewife’s next winemaker dinner. Journalist, feminist activist, and winemaker Keto Ninidze from the Oda Family Winery in Martvili, Georgia will be present at the dinner to showcase some of her wines alongside a specially curated menu.
